Village of Serrara
Serrara, tank to its strategic position, represents the main street of the municipality of Serrara Fontana. Situated in halfway between Mount Epomeo and the village of St. Angelo, 300m above the sea level, the village was used as refuge for the marine populations that, from Phoenicians to 1800, established on the island.

Serrara offers an amazing panorama, from its famous belvedere, it is possible to admire the sea of the gulf on Naples, Capri and the Pontine islands, in addition to the splendid vistas along the coast of Ischia and on the territory below. .

Serrara is a peasant country and houses the municipal building.

The City Hall
The picturesque location, defined by historian D’Ascia "the Switzerland of the island of Ischia, both for its elevated position both for the economy of the peasant type, consists of two neighbouring countries, Serrara and Fontana, in the past villages of shepherds and farmers become then a unique municipality in 1806. Serrara-Fontana borders Barano, Casamicciola Terme and Forio and consists of several locations: Noja, Calimera, Pantano, Ciglio, connecting Succhivo, Sant'Angelo. Fountain, whose name comes from a source discovered in the last century due to a landslide, is the highest village of the island of Ischia and its territory belongs to Mount Epomeo, 787 metres high. The climate is that of high hills, indeed a little continental if you remain on the Summit of Mount Epomeo, which has become the consolidated arrival point of a tour of the most beautiful one in Campania. Steep ravines, orchards and vineyards and woods are the characteristics of the "Earth" in less populated municipality on the island of Ischia. As mentioned earlier, the municipality of Serrara Fontana is divided into two main fractions of Serrara and Fontana, and is punctuated by toponyms as Kalimera and Boredom, Greek villages of clear mark, and still wrapped in mystery for residues of a mixed-Greek dialect still in use; then the Edge connecting Succhivo and, with their ubiquitous white churches; and finally, the isthmus of Sant'Angelo, the pedestrian oasis with Marina-Stadium attended by VIPs and by yachtmen of all nationalities. The presence of man here is documented from the iron age, but from the 8th to 6th centuries BC is a Greek village in the area of the quarry, where they unearthed evidence of imported pottery and local manufacturing. The village disappeared in the 6th century BC after a flood. Another small nucleus developed in the Hellenistic period, behind the current town of Noia, where a great deal of pottery was found, in particular the so-called "sealed clear". The finds are dated to the 4th century AD. In the middle ages, a famous village is that one of Noia, where Bishop of Ischia built a shelter. But, on the religious front, it should be recalled that already before the year 1000, about the so-called "Tower of Sant ' Angelo" a small Benedictine Monastery named "Sant'Angelo Alloquio" rises. The village of Serrara appears only in the 17th century: Bishop of Ischia, which has the title of Baron, keeps his vassals that only in the late 17th century and the beginning of the following, will change their vassalage with an annual offer symbolic to the Bishop. The territory was part of the "University" of Fontana that at the time of the Foundation of municipalities, will become the municipality of Serrara Fontana.
