To sea

The Island's ports (Click on the circles for a description)

Almost at the centre of the channel of Ischia you will find the Formiche di Vivara, marked out by beacon n. 2366, in a luminous elastic seamark, cardinal W, equipped with a topmark: the water is a minimum of 4 metres deep here. The Channel of Procida is limited to the North by Capo Miseno with the small town of Bacoli: the coast is shallow and sandy next to the lake and the port of Miseno. To the south of the island of Procida, with its port and relative shallow waters, there is the other bank of the channel. From the centre and towards the North, there are various shallows and protruding rocks: the most central is the Torrione shallow, marked out by a luminous elastic seamark South cardinal (n. 2354).
There are other shallows to the South of the Torrione shallow (you have to pass this for a good seabed): the first that you come to is the Marsiglia shallow, with minimum depths of 6 metres. North of the channel there are several electric cables on the seabed and it is therefore forbidden to moor, fish or weigh anchor here. The island of Vivara, a protected nature park, is covered by thick vegetation; on the top of the hill there is a tower. From Procida you can get here on foot, as transit is forbidden due to the presence of a point which supports water pipes. In the cove between the two islands there is a good shelter. In Ischia the Santuario shallow is around 750 metres WNW of the entrance to the port of Casamicciola: the rocky head is around 2.5 metres under the water and is very dangerous, especially due to its unexpected offshore position. Looking along the coastline, Punta del Soccorso. is clearly visible because of the white Church of the Soccorso. Inland, in the built-up area of Forio, there is an old tower which is known as Torrione. Be careful of the Lorio rocks, which protrude in various points SW of the headland, in the shallow a little further out to sea, with a minimum depth of 1.5 metres and at the Camerata rocks which are found to the West of the offshore quay of Forio. Punta Imperatore, the most conspicuous point of the island, can be easily recognised by the tower leaning against a 2 storey construction, all in white, where you will find beacon n. 2398. The Southern side of the headland steep and rather elevated. The Sanctuary of St. Nicola is visible from the sea; it is situated near the peak of mount Epomeo. The shallow stretches for 200 metres towards the West, with depths of 3 metres. North of the beacon, you will find the Pietra Nera rock, which is recognisable from its dark colour. This rock forms part of the trio, along with the Pietra Bianca and the Pietra Rossa. When you have reached Capo Negro, after a narrow and small cove, you will find Punta del Chiarito, which is characteristic for its unusual shape. The previous headland, Punta St. Angelo, is linked to the land by a low tongue of sand, where there are some fishermen's houses. In the higher part there is the homonymous demolished tower, at a height of 106 metres. This small peninsula creates two bays which are used for mooring. In Ischia Ponte, on the rounded natural islet, there is the Aragonese Castle, linked to the land by an artificial passage, which gives its name to the place.
