Winter visits to La Mortella Gardens
Sunday, November 1 was the last day in the calendar of ordinary openings of Giardini La Mortella for 2015. However, given the great success that the initiative has encountered in recent years, also for the winter from 2015 to 2016 you can visit the Giardini La Mortella in cold weather, to enjoy the more unusual aspects of the garden.
The visits, by appointment only, will be held to the accompaniment of competent naturalist guides who will tell the extraordinary story of the gardens. It will be told how famous English composer William Walton had moved to Ischia with his young Argentinian wife Susana immediately after the Second World War, as the couple has created an idyllic garden from nothing, and as he left to a Foundation to allow continuity in time. They tell the stories of musicians, music concerts, arts programs that the Foundation supports and you can visit the museum with the manuscripts of music and the imaginative puppet show by Lele Luzzati.
The guides will lead the visitor to explore the most unusual aspects of the garden, leading him to know plants until now remained unknown to the mass of the public who come to the Mortella in spring and summer.
Contrary to what might think those who come from different climates, in winter La Mortella should not be in the doldrums and no strips; indeed it is very green and lush, full of exotic flowers and cheerful colorful fruits. You can admire the sumptuous flowering camellias, from elegant Camellia sasanqua, followed by williamsi, the japonica, the reticulata; we will stop under the brilliant flowering Bauhinia Blakeana, the tree “orchids” from Hong Kong, inhaling the scent of ripe citrus that mingles with the fragrance of the most rare and delicate Southern acacia. In late winter, oriental magnolias bloom painting the garden downstream of fairy tale images. The pergola of the teahouse is dotted with thousands of large trumpet flowers of Solandra, called “Copa de Oro”, a golden sea in the background of lush green glossy leaves. The climb to the upper garden, which allows you to discover more and more spectacular views of the sea and the town of Forio, will be accompanied by the blue flowers of rosemary that emphasize, with cascades of fragrant branches, ladders and stone walls. It will culminate with the blooms exciting collection of Aloe that in winter light up in red, yellow, and orange. The Mediterranean maquis, thriving due to autumn rains and the cool season, colorful berries arbutus and myrtle, will be the background to the extravagant blooms of Australian plants such as Mimosa, the grevilleas, the Banksias. Japanese maples provide a blaze of color in the autumn oriental garden surrounding the house Tai before losing the leaves and leave the place of honor to the graphic silhouettes of bamboo.
A visit that will leave a mark, discovering landscape full of unexpected charm and poetic.
